چکیده

Leg Cycle Ergometry using Functional Electrical Stimulation provides many health benefits for paraplegic users. The Lumbo-sacral Anterior Root Stimulator Implant provides sufficient control over the muscles in the legs for leg powered cycling to be achieved, however for further development to take place, more knowledge is needed about the complicated pathways involved in the neuromuscular system from the nerve roots to the muscles in the leg. To achieve this, an analytical model has been developed from experimental measurements which predicts the force output from the leg due to stimulation on one of the twelve available channels dependent on stimulation level, duration of stimulation and leg position (crank angle). The model incorporates both linear and non-linear elements and is a first step towards a full model of the complicated non-linear processes involved in the neuromuscular system. The work here presents both the measurements used to develop the model and the modelled force response

A system for studying mechanisms of neuromuscular junction development and maintenance

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ), a cellular synapse between a motor neuron and a skeletal muscle fiber, enables the translation of chemical cues into physical activity. The development of this special structure has been subject to numerous investigations, but its complexity renders in vivo studies particularly difficult to perform. In vitro modeling of the neuromuscular junction represents a p...

Inter-rater Reliability of Needle Electromyographic Findings in Patients with Sciatica

Electrodiagnostic (EDX) testing, consisting of needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies, is used to evaluate the integrity of the neuromuscular system, including upper and lower motor neurons, the neuromuscular junction, and skeletal muscle [1-5]. Conducted as an extension of the clinical examination, EDX testing is the primary method used to objectively measure and document p...

Enhanced regeneration and functional recovery after spinal root avulsion by manipulation of the proteoglycan receptor PTPσ

Following root avulsion, spinal nerves are physically disconnected from the spinal cord. Severe motoneuron death and inefficient axon regeneration often result in devastating motor dysfunction. Newly formed axons need to extend through inhibitory scar tissue at the CNS-PNS transitional zone before entering into a pro-regenerative peripheral nerve trajectory. CSPGs are dominant suppressors in sc...

Effects of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization and Aquatic Exercises on the Pain, Disability, Lumbopelvic Control, and Spinal Posture of Patients With Non-specific Low Back Pain

Objectives: Using an exercise intervention to improve lumbopelvic control (LPC) can enhance the pain severity and disability of participants with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). The present study aimed to compare dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) exercises and common aquatic exercises (AEs) in terms of improving the pain, disability, LPC, and spinal posture of patients with non-spec...

Can the human lumbar posterior columns be stimulated by transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation? A modeling study.

Stimulation of different spinal cord segments in humans is a widely developed clinical practice for modification of pain, altered sensation, and movement. The human lumbar cord has become a target for modification of motor control by epidural and, more recently, by transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation. Posterior columns of the lumbar spinal cord represent a vertical system of axons and when a...
